International Day of Democracy is observed on September 15^th every year globally.

International Day of Democracy is observed globally to mark the importance of democracy and create awareness among people about democratic rights. The history of the International Day of Democracy dates back to the year 2007 when the United Nations General Assembly passed an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to observe the day. The first International Day of Democracy was celebrated on 15 September 2008. Equality is the foundation stone of democracy. People should be treated equally in any democratic country irrespective of their age, sex, gender, and social status. Equal rights are critical to democratic governance.

According to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” A democratic country is one where people have a say in everything that is happening in the country. No person or any higher authority has a right to suppress the voice of common people.

Today, Adarsh Institute of Management & Information Technology (AIMIT) in association with Confederation of Indian Industry-Young Indians (CII-Yi) Bengaluru, observed International Day of Democracy.  Guest Speaker of the day -Ms. Jaya Bhavya, an advocate, President of the Karnataka State Council for Legal Awareness Council, member of Karnataka State Bar Council highlighted the relevance of the democracy.

She is a focused HR professional with over 11 years’ experience in diverse industries- Healthcare, Biotech, Manufacturing Legal & IT. Currently she heads HR & administration and Strategic HR partner at Uptycs Private Limited. She possess diverse interest and indulged in social service- Co-Chair Yuva, CII Young Indians (Yi), Bengaluru,   Karata  Black Belt & won various prizes in State, National Level Karate tournaments.

On this session, she spoke about the various forms of government, importance of democracy on the people, Human Rights & focused on Indian Constitution.

Students prepared charts & depicted the list of democratic countries in the world, information on democratic index, the world’s 10 strongest democracies as per Democracy Index (2020)-Norway, Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand, Finland, Ireland, Canada, Denmark Australia, and Switzerland. The charts were prepared by Sachidanand R, Tejaswini. U, Sahana M, and Shashank M.

This event was conceptualized by Dr. Venkataraman, Director and Principal, AIMIT and co-ordinated by Dr. Usha Prabhu and support extended by all faculty members.
